What is the Drain Cleaning Certification Program?
It is a NASSCO certification course that is specifically designed for professionals involved in cleaning laterals and is a perfect complement to NASSCO’s Building Sewer and Drain Inspection Certification Program (BSDI™). It provides the methodology to standardize the cleaning process to ensure lateral are cleaned safely and efficiently, while avoiding damage to underground infrastructure.
NASSCO will release Drain Cleaning Version 2 in 2027 which will include instruction on the proper cleaning of both laterals and in-building sewers and drains. Individuals certified in Drain Cleaning Version 1 (laterals only) will be eligible to upgrade to Version 2 at no cost upon release.
Who should become certified?
Plumbers, small contractors and others who are involved in lateral cleaning should become certified. Certification will help them expand their business.
How much does the course cost?

Which NASSCO-Certified Trainers Teach Drain Cleaning?
Drain Cleaning is only taught online and is self-paced. There are no trainers.
How Does the Drain Cleaning Course Work?
The self-paced online course takes approximately 2 hours to complete and includes an exam. Students do not need to take the course all at one time (they may save their work and return when it’s convenient for them).
Unlike the course, the exam must be completed all in one sitting, so students should come prepared and have their manuals available. It contains 25 questions, and 21 points are needed to pass. They have two chances to pass.
Access to the course is granted for a period of 60 days after it is first accessed.
Are Continuing Education Credits (CEU) or Professional Development Hours (PDH) provided?
Yes, upon request at enrollment. 0.25 CEUs or 2.5 PDHs are provided only to students who successfully pass the exam.
How long is the certification good for?
Certification is valid for a period of 3 years. Individuals will be required to recertify to maintain certification.
