Sewer Cleaning FAQs

Q: Is there a difference between "light" and "heavy" cleaning?

A: Currently, NASSCO does not differentiate between "light" and "heavy" cleaning. Some specifications differentiate such cleaning for pay purposes based on type and quantity
of debris. NASSCO's Industry Standards committee is currently working toward a standardized method of specifying different cleaning protocols.

Q: What is the recommended sewer cleaning schedule?

A: There is no current standard schedule or frequency for sewer cleaning operations. NASSCO currently does not recommend standard frequencies for O&M (Operation and
Maintenance) activities, because there are many factors influencing these time intervals. An article by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests frequencies
for some O&M activities (see table 2). The article can be downloaded from the following link:  http://water.epa.gov/scitech/wastetech/upload/2002_06_28_mtb_sewcl.pdf
